Wednesday 25th
Quiet day in the flat and Emily and Caro came over here for
dinner.Thursday 26th
Checked out where the Olympic flame relay was going to be
today, the 2nd last day of the relay and decided to go to Holland Park
over near Kensington cos thought the AbFab women might have been running a leg
there (tho turned out they did it in Kings Rd).
Had a nice cruise thru the two Oxfam shops in Kensington High
street but very Kensington prices and only bought a small insulated lunch bag (since
previous one was used for scallops in Islay, the smell of which was impossible
to remove !) before heading into Holland Park where there was a great carnival
atmosphere. There was a whole kids sports programme on the cricket field and
orchestra and opera singers outside the Opera House in the park. All terribly English
with conductor wearing straw boater, children invited up to conduct and rousing
choruses of “Jerusalem”
People were lined up about 3 deep when the runner a local
girl with the flame came through,
surrounded by 3 other runners on each side, and the crowd which included lots of children
cheered and waved their Union Jacks madly. Of course we met another NZ woman in
the crowd.
We then walked on through Holland Park, which was very
beautiful area with some wild areas and a beautiful Japanese garden, and out on to Bayswater road
where the flame relay was to come back
from a loop around Shepherds Bush. This time we saw the whole carry on that
travels in front of it, rather like the carvanne that preceeds the Tour de France,
sponsors vehicles with music and dancing girls and boys, lots of security and
police presence. Heaps of people here also, everyone cheerful and waving flags.
Home again on 328 bus.
