Sunday 5th August
Intended to go and watch the Women’s Marathon and I set off
early to try out the “Boris Bikes”, the rental bikes which are on stands all
around central London. The nearest place to us was at St Johns Wood so took bus
down there and had only just done all the hire stuff with a credit card thru an
online kiosk on the site when the heavens opened up and it just bucketed down.
Sheltered under tree with umbrella for 10 min, decided it wasn’t going to lift
and returned my bike within the 30 min free time and caught bus back home again
to watch online. Will have to try again another day.
Lynds off to church at St James down road towards the
village and enjoyed the service very much.
In the afternoon set off at about 5 pm to South Kensington tube
station, then walked thru subway to Exhibition street where there were lots of
street food stalls and street theatre people including about 100 strong marching
band from Pennsylvania.
Then at 6.45 pm into to Royal Albert Hall for 7.30 pm Proms concert. We had time to have a bit of a look around inside, such an interesting building.
Concert was by BBC Scottish Symphony and Scottish Youth
Orchestras and programme included some Wagner, some Bruckner, and the Bruch
Scottish Fantasy. Violinist was Nicola Benedetti who played a magnificent
encore duet with the first violinist,
that may have been by Willie Hunter a renowned Shetland composer. Then at 6.45 pm into to Royal Albert Hall for 7.30 pm Proms concert. We had time to have a bit of a look around inside, such an interesting building.
We sat next to Joe who runs a hotel in Shetland and whose daughter was harpist in SYO. Prince William was there apparently as the Youth Orchestra were to meet him after concert, fantastic evening there. The Proms concerts are broadcast live on BBC TV and you can watch them for next week from the BBC iPlayer
Jubilee line Tube a bit crowded on way home because evening
athletics session just finished at Olympic Park.
