Saturday 28th July
Fine sunny day. Headed off Wimbledon this morning for the
first of our Olympic Events. Took Jubilee and District lines to Southfields one
of the stations for the tennis, walked about 20 min down to site then had about
another 20 min wait to get through security, all bags scanned and all visitors had a pat down search.
Then found our seats in the Number 1 Court which is enclosed
and with roof over much of the seating though not the court itself. We were
absolutely delighted with our seats, quite high up in stand but had great view and
we were in shade and sheltered from the one isolated shower that came thru .Saw
2 men’s singles and 2 women’s singles matches during course of the day, matches
that were won by David Nalbandian (Argentina),
Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain), Petra Kvitova (Czech) and Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina).
At lunch time we sat on the Hill in front of the big screen
there and watched Roger Federer play and later saw him in person when he was going
to post match press conference. Michelle Obama was present earlier in the
morning when Serena Williams had been playing on Centre Court.
At the end of the day Lyndsay joined a crowd of people walking into Centre Court
and managed to get a photo before the usher asked to see her ticket !!
We wandered around until about 8 pm and watched various doubles
matches happening on the outside courts then headed back to exit and got on
what we thought was a shuttle bus heading back to the Southfields station but
it turned out to be a regular bus to Putney bridge station which was fine as we
got to see yet another different part of London but still ended up on correct
tube line.
We headed into central London as we thought we would finish a good Saturday with a visit to Kiwi
House, the NZ fan zone at Granary Square. Bit of a disappointing mistake as we
had to pay £10
each instead of just £5 as Comedy Show that night, another £10
each for 1pie and 1 drink, at 9 pm food was reduced to a few pies and there was
no Moa Noir beer. Comedy show was 2 NZ guys embarrassingly bad, most
sexual/lavatory humour with every 2nd word f***. Hardly a showcase
of NZ talent and makes us a bit reluctant to go there again.
