Monday 6 th August
This was our big day at the main Olympic park, our tickets
were for the evening session 18.50 -21.30hrs (£150 for each ticket !!). Set
off on Overground train to Stratford (train was full by the time it arrived at
West Hampstead) at about 11.30 am hoping to get to park in middle of morning
athletics session to avoid the 80,000 people leaving the stadium after that
session.
But it was so busy out there it made no difference because hockey, water polo and the place where big
screen is were all busy as well as the 80.00 people in Athletics Stadium.
Easy transition into Olympic Park from station, lots of direction
signs and lots of volunteers with megaphones directing you, all cheerful, some
on megaphones singing their instructions. Usual bag screening but no pat down
search here.
Bit overwhelming once inside park because of so many people.
We had planned to go and sit by big screen and watch other Olympic events but
the queue to get in there was about 400 metres long so gave that a miss and ate
our home made picnic lunch on one of the hundreds of picnic tables outside one of the huge
McDonald’s in the park (I think there were at least 3) and spent ½ talking to
young couple with baby. Then walked further up towards hockey stadium and big
screen and sat by canal bank and talked to volunteer woman about our age for
about ¾ hour. She was working 14 hours a day as a driver for one of the IOC
members and his family and then going home to do her paid day’s work.
