Monday 30th July
Slow morning at home after late night at Wembley. Good Skype
conversation with Robyn. In late afternoon headed out from the flat on another
exploration of our neighbourhood, a walk of about 1 km down to Kilburn High
Road and found a completely different community from Finchley which is a
similar distance but in opposite direction. Lots of shops with halal and exotic
(even to the cook) food, narrow aisles,
stuff crammed up to ceiling and cheerful talkative people. Lots of cheap
clothing shops but very neat and tidy and well organised. Also discovered
“Poundland” ( 2 shops in this chain in one street) where everything is 1 pound
so did nearly all our supermarket shop there. Limited brands and extraordinarily
cheap even when doing the “in the head “conversion to NZ$.
Two blocks of the High Road were blocked off completely
after an accident earlier in the afternoon
(I had heard/seen the police, fire and ambulances all go past our place
about 2 hours before) where an older man had been run over by a large truck and
seriously injured close to where a woman had been killed the previous week.
This road is a main bus route so there were heaps of buses backed up in traffic
with police trying to re route them.
Also hadn’t realised Glenda Jackson was the MP for this area
until saw a notice in a shop window about her community meeting times.
New phone battery arrived from Amazon and phone charged up
quickly so probably better than the last replacement one. It arrived via the
Amazon Locker system which they appear to have around London. I had opted to
have my parcel delivered to the nearest locker ( well bank of different sized
lockers) which is just 10 min walk away outside the Sainsburys at Finchley Rd.
Very fast delivery service, less than 48 hrs. They email you when your order
has been dispatched and again when it arrives and give you a locker code. Just
enter the code and the door to your locker pops open.
Had been considering buying a Kindle because while the
Kindle on iPhone is good for odd occasions when waiting for a bus etc it’s a bit difficult for long periods of
reading with my aging eyes, so ordered one tonight. Lyndsay says I am ordering things
from Amazon just because I am so taken with the locker sytem !!
