Wednesday 29th August. Verona to Torre di Canvalle in Radda in
Chianti
Up for breakfast at 8 am and then I went off to hairdressers with Cristina
for desperately needed haircut, last one was in Troon in Scotland 2 months ago.
Just walked around corner to local salon with 3 women working there and had
nice cut for €14 and discovered Italian women really do say “Mamma Mia” quite
often in conversations.
Packed up car, bought some sandwiches from café and fruit from fruit shop
where we had parked our car for 2 nights and then hit road for Chianti.
Good trip in airconditoned car as 30 plus outside, now with own music
selection ( havent yet got to ABBA !) and our English speaking Mrs TomTom was
pretty good except for one slightly stressful occasion where we found a toll booth
between us and the roundabout she had just give directions for.
Left Verona about 11 am and arrived at Canvalle at Radda in Chianti about 4
pm, where temp was 35 degrees, but fortunately there is a swimming pool in
garden where we spent rest of afternoon.
We had been recommended to this place by Hennings and Juliane Trier,
Parituhu guests last NZ summer who had been there for their honeymoon and
subsequently returned last northern summer.
The owner Lele Vitali (with husband Augusto) is an amazing woman: cheerful,
smart, well travelled and well versed in international events, politically
astute, speaks English colloquially and obviously works very hard.
They have owned this property since 1970’s and converted it from a barn to
a large comfortable residence. Their 800 olive trees on the property are
managed organically and the olives go to press that only takes organic olives.
As well as our room in the main house there is a tower about 200 metres away
which is standalone with 2 bedrooms, kitchen and living room.
I like to hear the sound of the church bells ringing across the valley
between here and the village
Dinner Wednesday night at “Le Fourchette del Chianti” in Radda village.
Eggplant roll with mozarella
Didn’t use the supplied mosquito net and am now bitten all over.
