Friday 7th September 2012. Nice, France
Hot sunny morning with haze across sea and hills. Great
breakfast at Star Hotel, very nice bread and mini croissants, pain au
chocolate, and discovered the joys of fig jam.
Managed to figure out ticket vending machine at tram
and got day pass for €4 each and took it down to beach. The electric trams here
are quite new (2007) very nicely fitted out inside, run almost silently currently just on one line but they have
plans to extend that and add another two. Where they run across the open square
for maybe 400 metres there are no overhead lines and they run on battery power.
Also have a section of the track which
has grass all around it. Very clever.
Once at the beach we hired bikes, free for first half hour €1 next half hour and then €3 hour after
that, and rode around to the port area, many large gin palaces tied up in harbour,
small yachts racing just off end of the
point. I rode further down the beach front past all the apartment blocks.
Then found ourselves a relatively shady spot beside
a lifeguards tower and spent the next 2 hours on the beach , swimming, reading
paper and sleeping. The beach at Nice is all stony, people lie on it
sunbathing and actually getting into
water is quite difficult because the stones are quite loose. Definitely need to
wear shoes here.
Lunch from
the Mono Prix supermarket at end of our street and a siesta back in our room.
In evening took tram around closer to harbour and
had dinner at a small vegetarian restaurant Lynds had read about in NZ Herald
travel pages. Food quite nice but fixed menu, had about 5 courses and was €35
each which was somewhat extravagant for us. Wander around the port area and
back to hotel on tram again.
Tonight the rubbish got collected at the early hour
of 11 pm.
