Monday
17 September 2012 Barcelona, Spain
Spent
the day getting to know the Barcelona Metro system and walking around much of
the central city area.
Lyndsay
and I started by walking to the market in a large tented structure just on the
other side of the Hospital Clinic, nice fruit and vegetables, cheeses, lots of
butchers preparing various cuts of meat, pork, beef, rabbit, chicken. Most
ingenious large pair of shears bolted to workbench used to swiftly dismember
rabbits and chickens to the customer’s order. We were there in middle of day
and market was starting to close down.
Then we
ventured on to find an old fashioned grocery store called Quilez where all the
staff wear grey striped smocks. Quite low ceiling in this store with stock from
floor to ceiling. Interesting extensive wine supply with prices ranging from €
4-5 up to one bottle I saw for €544.
After
this we turned our attention to Vincon, the most amazing homeware ( for want of
a better term) store in what was once a
private house at Diagonal and near one of the Gaudi houses ( over the back
fence !!). It was over 3 floors and out into a garden area, with the top 2
floors still being architecturally spectacular. As well as the building itself,
the layout and display of the products on sale was a work of art. Saw lots of
beautiful things including a shopping trolley, designed similar to childs
stroller, light and very well balanced
that I would love to be able to wheel to/from
New World supermarket in Devonport with our groceries.
Then
walked from there back to The Patio for a well earned rest. Later walked to the Hotel Zenith, just around
the corner where we had a lovely set menu dinner out on the deck.
Today
would have been my mother’s 100th birthday.
