September 2012 Barcelona, Spain.
Rod and
Helen had pre purchased tickets for Sagrada Familia on Monday with assistance
from Tony so when we arrived there at 9.30 am this morning we were spared the
hour long wait in the queue and just had
a 10 min wait in shorter queue. So much has been written about this Gaudi
masterpiece which is still under construction that its difficult to say much
more. It is truly a spectacular building that is enhanced by the quality of the
ongoing modern building work. The acoustics ( organ plays hourly) and the light
diffusion through the building are memorable. We had the audio guides ( I am
now a big fan of these devices) and also took the lift ride up one of the
towers and walked down the 350 or so
steps in the winding staircase !! View from top a bit disappointing as
Barcelona seems to be under perpetual haze except straight after heavy rain.
From
Familia we took Metro and then walked up steep hill to Park Guell where Gaudi
designed second set of residences for Guell family. Crowds of people there, interesting buildings
though I did remark to Lyndsay that I am more of a fan of straight lines.
Very
long walk to Metro and rush hour crowded ride home.
Dinner
at “taxi driver café” around the corner. Least memorable food but cheerful all
the same.
