 Wednesday 23 May
Michelle, Harry, Lyndsay and I set off in cab to Hunters Point ferry terminal in Queens  to catch ferry to Southport in Manhattan. It was a bit of a mission to actually find the terminal as sort of in the middle of a building site and even the cab driver didn’t know where it was !! Fantastic value of $4 fare down East River with a number of stops on Brooklyn side before getting to Manhattan and despite the misty day I could clearly see the Statue of Liberty and finally get it in perspective with its surroundings.

Onto an M15 bus up Manhattan for about ½ hour ride to United Nations building on banks of Hudson River. Have to go thru security checks just to get into main building. Original building looks a bit tired inside and there seems to be quite a lot of work going on outside. But interesting photographic displays in foyer area on various areas related to UN work.

Then off to Number 1 UN Plaza which is a modern building on the other side of the road from main UN building, through all the security again and then up to 21st floor to meet with Helen Clark. Very kind of her to fit us into her busy schedule and we spent interesting and pleasant 20 min or so with her, pity about weather cos visibility about maybe 1 km.

Home on q32 bus again and then walked down to dinner at “TJ” a Japanese restaurant just nearby, one of the Quinn’s “locals”  with very nice tempura , sushi, sake etc
