Thursday 31st May
Checked out of Earls Court YHA but
left bags there for the day. Took bus from Earls Court down to Chelsea harbour
and then walked down to Chelsea Embankment. Heaps of preparations going on for
the Jubilee Pageant on Thames on Sunday, waterblasters cleaning piers, bunting
and big screens being set up-apparently some minor royals will be boarding
boats here. Then walked around to Chelsea Football Ground and went in an open
door and found ourselves inside the stadium which seems to be being returfed.
No one noticed that we had even been there. Club shop full of people buying
very expensive Chelsea shirts and all sorts of souvenirs. Walked back to Earls
Court through the magnificent Old Brompton Cemetery, collected our gear and
then took tube over to Waterloo and checked into Union Jack Club ( UK Armed
Services Club). Our room was on the 17th floor which has been fitted out with extra large
rooms and accessible bathrooms funded by the ?? Help for Heroes Fund for
disabled servicemen. So we have this monster room with TV and wifi for 6 days
with a south easterly view across London, Old Vic Theatre immediately below us
plus the headquarters of the whole London Ambulance service across the road and St Thomas’s Hospital about 400 metres so
sirens go day and night.
Friday 1st June
Out walking early to South Bank,
saw a crowd at railings behind BBC Studios, saw woman come out and paparazzi
all started snapping away, . We asked two women in crowd who was she and they
looked at us as if we were from Mars, ” how could you not know who Carol Vorderman was?”. Famous apparently,
like Judy Bailey was. Then scoped out possible places along South Bank for
viewing on Sunday and met the “Hampshire Royals Here Again ” group , 5 Women from Hampshire who have
camped out for the last 5 Royal occasions and were preparing to bed down for 2
nights. H walked as far as Southwalk.
Then back to room, tired, salad and corned beef for dinner and to bed.
