Monday 21st May

Off to yet another US Post Office, at Chevy Chase this time, with 8 lb parcel to send home-by now you must be thinking we have nothing left in our suitcases but we each still have about 19 kilos each. Then met up with Michael in a movie theatre coffee shop for a very pleasant hour with very good expresso coffee and Washington Post.

Then off to Radio Shack and Best Buy to try to buy new battery for Lyndsays Nokia phone which had died. No joy, can only do online but long delivery time so bought new Samsung 3500 phone, cheapest unlocked phone in shop (subsequently in London bought the appropriate battery for Nokia  off Amazon UK for 2.95 GBP, free delivery and delivered next day –wow!!)

The ventured onto Metro again –to White House front aspect for obligatory photo op ( with several hundred other people), then main  Vietnam Memorial, again low key memorial but pretty sobering to see 60,000 names here, a lost generation of young Americans. Also Women’s Vietnam memorial too.

Then on to Lincoln Memorial at end of Mall –lots of inspiring words plus you could really imagine Martin Luther King giving his “I have dream” speech from there.

Walked back around the northern side of the White House –interesting to watch the procedure as a little garden rubbish truck came out the gate -5 guards in a well choreographed dance and great steel bars that came up to lock the gate afterwards. Had a finger waggled at me by a guard as I photographed this momentous event!!

Started raining so to “White House” gift shop-super tacky –you could take a photo on your own camera  of yourself sitting at a replica Oval Office Desk for $5 plus buy a DVD of Presidential White House bloopers for about $25.
Then to a cafĂ© for another hour where we sat next to the Washington correspondent of a gay website having a shouted Skype conversation about gay marriage, which suddenly is flavour of   month in the Presidential campaign ( Yawn !!)

Then we did some shopping in Macys and home on Metro and E6 bus before Michael (at Commencement ceremonies)  and Saida ( at meditation) so met the baby sitter Grace.
Spent evening till midnight going thru the US citizenship quiz that Michael had to sit next day (he passed)  and we would have done quite well too!!
