Saturday 2nd June
Late start, cooler, in wind fleece
and jeans today. Walked across Waterloo Bridge, along Victoria embankment,
where we met two Welsh ladies camping out, and on to St Pauls to check out the
YHA there, specifically to see what floor we were going to be on the next week.
Turned out to be 2 floors up and couldn’t be changed.
Then headed off to the
Guildhall/Museum of London but got only
as far as Goldsmiths Hall where there was a fascinating exhibition of all
manner of things related to gold, from coins of croessus to gold threads used
in embroidery to jugs and plates and jewellery of sorts. Finally managed to get
to the Guildhall Art Museum where the most interesting thing was being able to
walk into the ruins of a Roman Amphitheatre in the basement levels. Then on to
the Guildhall itself with all the
banners of the guilds hanging way up high. Staff were busy getting ready for
the reception for the Queen on Tuesday. On the other sideof the square is the
church of St Lawrence Jewry, a Wren church almost destroyed in the Blitz but
rebuilt and beautiful as it ever would have been. This is the church for the
City of London financial people.
Back to UJC, nap, showered and
down for dinner but sudden rush because whole place full of people who had
arrived in London specifically for the thames event. Dinner was 14.85 gbp for
both of us for 1 main each. Started raining again about 10 pm so we went down
to South Bank to see how the women from Hampshire were faring. Lots more people
camping out by then, in tents and under tarpaulins. Went back to our dry warm room.
