Sunday
30 September 2012 Bibao to San Sebastian
Felt
somewhat poorly first thing and went off and found Farmacia that sold me
efficient over counter cold remedy including pseudoephrine.
Left
Bilbao about 10 am and headed up coast road, through Guernica immortalised in
the Picasso painting of the bombing of this town in 1937 during the Spanish
Civil War.
Encountered a peleton on
mountain roads, lots of cyclist out and about.
Had a
stop in Letritio, easy parking by a hotel in another lovely little port town,
had a walk around the harbour and then checked out a hotel or two in case Lynds
and I come back here to stay after San Sebastian.

Continued
on and made an abortive attempt to enter Mutricu where we thought we might stop
for lunch, got car jammed up in no exit area and then made an exit assisted by
French woman who had been among the people watching us attempt the impossible.
Then
stopped in another small town, Deba, and had tapas lunch in square with dozens
of families out for Sunday lunch.

Found
Hotel Record after only one “around the block again” attempt. Nice little one
star hotel, older building but quite comfortable, situated in a residential area about 10 min
walk to first beach (Playa de Ondaretta,
the surfing beach ) and with frequent
bus service down to the old town from a stop about 200m away. Seems bus fares
in this city are a flat €1.45 irrespective of how far you travel.
We four
are in the family suite on 2nd floor i.e. 2 rooms together with
bathroom off one of them so you could only let it to 4 people who know each
other as someone always has to walk through the other bedroom to bathroom.
After
settling in we headed down to beach in late afternoon, where there were dozens
of people surfing and walked the length of the promenade with the hundreds of
other people out and about. We checked out a small restaurant on seafront
recommended by hotel and booked ourselves in for paella later in evening.
The San Sebastian Film Festival had finished the day before we arrived but still lots of billboards up.
Lots of people out and about and a bit of street theatre. Very nicely restored bandstand also.
Headed
back to hotel for bit of a nap, later a glass or two of vino tinto before going
back for the paella which was delicious as was the roasted rabbit that Rod had.
Walked back to hotel.
