Monday 1
October San Sebastian Spain
Sunrise
is very late here now, about 8 am so we are sleeping late as very dark until
then. There is a large school nearby and the kids are heading up the street
about 8.30 am so they must have all got ready for school in the dark. Daylight
savings doesn’t finish here until end of October and temperature drops quite
quickly in evening and cold in morning
Took the
#13 bus down to old city area and then #16 along past Playa de la Concha, the
swimming beach, to the 100 year old Funicular which goes up the hill at the
western end to Monte Igueldo Mendia. Lovely old red painted cars which go up very
steep slope.
At the
top there are great views over whole of San Sebastian.
Plus another old fashioned fun fair like Tipidabo in Barcelona, though on a much much smaller scale. It has various “games of chance” like tortoise racing, clowns with ping pong balls and slot cars where some German school children were having a great time winning soft toys. Also an old fashioned carousel, House of Horrors, and dodgems not operating today.
However the roller coaster was operating and Helen, Lynds and I were brave enough to try it at €2 each. Had a couple of very steep up and down bits and we screamed appropriately.

Helen
and I then also climbed to the top of the tower which as well as great views had
a great display of old photos of life in San Sebastian in late 19th
and early 20th century.
After heading
down to beach again past whole tennis complex including both outdoor and indoor
clay courts we bought some ham and cheese rolls from local patisserie and had
nice picnic on beach.
Lyndsay
and I both had bought togs and towels with us and utilised the changing
facilities there (total cost of €4 including hot showers) and had a swim. Beach
a bit rocky at that point but water fine. Later walked further around to beach
just by old city where more changing rooms and far less rocks so plan further
swim there later this week.
Big warning
notices, including emergency numbers to phone, on beach about Portugese Man- o-
war jellyfish.
Headed back
to hotel for siesta on the #13 bus figuring it would take us near hotel however
took us on about 1 hour tour of the housing estates (including place called
Lezo, very appropriate!) and overlooking the main port area, which is well away
from the town, before heading back into city and stopping near our hotel.
Discovered Rod and Helen just arrived back about 10 min before us having had a
similar experience.
About
7.30 pm set off on #13 bus again for tapas in old town following list of
recommended places. Two were fine, very
tasty morsels with wine to match and crowded but last was very mediocre and no
one there. Taxi back to hotel. Later woman at hotel told us only the bean dish
was worth eating at the last place.
